Mark "Boots" Holst's UFC debut news

Ottawa/Gatineau bred MMA fighter Mark "Boots" Holst, who trains out of the mammoth sized Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts, makes his UFC debut tonight versus John Gunderson at The Ultimate Fighter Finale in Vegas. Hoslt, 24, has been one of the biggest faces in Ottawa MMA since 2006 when he first made his MMA debut versus Shane Savage at Apex: Canada vs America. Since his debut, Holst has captured multiple MMA titles, as well as internation recognition for his Muay Thai skills.

Tune into Bloodycanucksmma.com to catch the up to the second news of how Mark's UFC debut goes.

Live Play by play thanks to the folks at Sherdog.com and forwarded to you for those who didn't know their play by play existed.

Round 1
Holst misses a wild head kick early. Gunderson tries a double leg but is stuffed. Gunderson scoops Holst up and slams him down hard and lands in side control. Holst moves over and pulls to full guard. Holst tries to wrap up a triangle but misses. Holst expertly prevents the guard pass. Finally Gunderson scoots over and passes to side control. Holst quickly sucks Gunderson into full guard again. Not a whole lot of action with a minute left. Holst tries another triangle from butterfly guard but he's defended. 10-9 Gunderson.

Round 2
Gunderson quickly shoots in and lands the double leg. Holst pulls guard. Gunderson eventually moves to half guard but is quickly sucked back into full. Very little action 90 seconds in. The crowd is sparsely begging Rosenthal to stand them up midway through. Gunderson's sub defense is totally neutralizing Holst's sub attempts. Rosenthal stands them up with 95 seconds left. They exchange on their feet and Gunderson slips down and onto his back. Holst dives onto him and quickly tries an arm triangle but he misses it. they scramble to their feet. Gunderson takes him down again and the round ends with him in Holst's guard. 10-9 Gunderson.

Round 3
Gunderson throws a right/left combo but misses. He misses another and then ties Holst up against the cage. They separate. Gunderson lands a right/left but it's not hard. They clinch and Holst latches on a standing guillotine. He drops to guard but Gunderson slips out of the choke on the way down. They posture and Gunderson falls into a kimura. "Guns" defends it well. 80 seconds later Holst finally lets it go. He tries again. Gunderson slowly scoots his opponent into the cage. Very dull final round. With a minute left, Holst needs a sub to win. Holst rolls over and snags Gunderson's right arm. Holst can't stretch it out and can't pull off the armbar at the horn. 10-9 Gunderson.

Wreck MMA presents: Bad Intentions

The time has come to announce that Wreck MMA will be back in Gatineau on Friday August 20th to present Wreck MMA: Bad Intentions. But, this time around, Wreck MMA is heading to the prestigious Casino du Lac-Leamy to showcase the top MMA event in Gatineau.

In the main event of the evening, two of the top welterweights in Canada will be facing off to determine the number one contender for theWreck Welterweight Title. After an impressive Wreck debut against the popular Louis-Philippe Carle, Simon ‘The Mutant’ Marini returns to the Wreck ring to face the talented FIT MMA fighter Cory Macdonald.

“Both these fighters have the talent to fight in the top organizations in the world,” said Wreck matchmaker Alex Caporicci. “I believe the winner of this fight can potentially take the next step and follow another Wreck veteran in Mark Holst and make their way to the UFC, Strikeforce or to Japan.”

Macdonald has been eagerly anticipating a fight for about a year and is ecstatic to be stepping into the Wreck ring and being featured in the main event. Macdonald sports a 10-2-0 record and has wins against UFC veteran Edwin Dewees and talented Canadians Matt Macgrath, Dan Grandmaison, Martin Grandmont and Rowan Cunningham. In his last bout, Macdonald defeated Team Revolution member Thiago Goncalves. Marini also came off a long layoff prior to his last bout and has a win against UFC Veteran and former King of the Cage lightweight champion, Alberto Crane. Expect a lot of bad intentions in this bout, as this is an opportunity to take their career to the next level.

Making his return to Wreck is the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts’ Remi ‘Bam Bam’ Morvan who looks to get back to his regular winning ways against Simms KnockDown MMA’s Chance Whalen. Also returning after impressive MMA debut in April is RAMA’s Jeffrey Laughren who will be facing the experienced Nick Portieous.

Wreck MMA is also proud to announce the MMA debut of Toronto’s Alex Ricci. Ricci is a two-time Canadian Muay-Thai Champion and is looking to transform his successful muay-thai career into a successful MMA career. But standing in his way is a fighter with the same goals in mind. A veteran of muay-thai fights in Thailand and around the world, Adrenaline MMA’sAdil ‘Rambo’ Abbas will be looking to spoil Ricci’s coming out party.

Look for an announcement shortly with additional fights as they get signed and where to buy your tickets for Wreck MMA: Bad Intentions!!

Rd1: Both fighters come out swinging hard after they touch gloves to kick off the round. After exchanges and big shots from both fighters Lauzon gets a takedown and controls from the side. After taking lauzon back Mellon loses he’s position and Lauzon sweeps to guard where the round ends after a couple shots from the top.
Rd2: Wasting no time at all Mellon takes Lauzon down with a quick double leg. After quick movement on top Lauzon gives up his back and turtles, from there Mellon tries to sink in his hooks but is unsuccessful, Lauzon rolls to his back where Mellon takes guard and pounds away for the rest of the round.
Rd 3. Mellon again wastes no time taking down lauzon and keeping him there, working from the side for the majority of the round Mellon keeps position and attempts an armbar that he secures just as the round ends.
Mellon wins the fight Via 30-27 decision

2. 155 Guillaume Caron (Juvaldo- Val D’Or) vs. Eric Nadon (NX Martial Arts/Arts Martiaux Evolution Gatineau)

Both fighters come out with heavy exchanges and Caron gets a knockdown, Nadon gets caught in side control and is able to stand where the round is finished from standing seeing both fighters scoring from the feet.

Rd 2

Neither fighter wants to take the fight to the ground and both trade nice combos back and forth, both fighters take shots to the groin and different times, taking their breaks. Caron remains the better of the two in the stand up

Rd3

This round sees the same deal, lots of trading back and forth as both fighters score from the feet. Caron seals the deal late in the 3rd with a takedown landing in side control and finishes the round with strikes from the top

Caron wins via decision

3. 155 Chris Trembelas (Prodigy MMA-St. Thomas) vs. Jon Chiera (Team Bushido- Ottawa)

Cheira starts off the round by taking Trembelas down with a quick double, where he is able to pass from guard to half and tries to finish the round with a kimura, just as he sets it, the round ends.

Cheira scores another take down after a brief exchange where he also gets the better of the points. Cheira goes for the same kimura, and rolls into an armbar before Trembelas is able to escape. Both fighters go through the ropes, starting the fighters in the middle of the ring for the last 10 seconds. From the restart Trembelas stands up and gets slammed hard again by cheira.

In round 3 Cheira goes for the take down again and is reversed by Trembelas he unloads briefly from the guard. For the rest of the round both fighters remain inactive on the ground

Cheira wins by decision

4. 160 Bruno Pierre-Dubois (Juvaldo-Val d’Or) vs. Eric Girard (Ronin MMA- Ottawa)

After two beautiful hip tosses Eric Girard allows Dubois to stand with him. Girard, the more technical striker lands the better combos with the hands, as Dubois throws wildly. The round ends with both fighters exchanging hands.

Rd 2

Neither fighter wants to take the fight to the ground as both exchange heavy hands. Girard remains the more technical of the two, but Dubois lands solid shots and lands his push kicks at will. The round ends with Dubois landing bigger shots with his hands and Girard stuck in the corner.

Dubois lands a couple big shots but misses and head kick and loses his balance. Girard jumps on and lands side control just as both fighters slide under the bottom rope. When the fight is restarted on the ground after a brief scramble on the ground Girard is able to take an arm and secure an armbar at 57 seconds into the third round.

5. 160 Jeff Andrews (Team Bushido-Ottawa) vs. Gavin Ward (FIT MMA-Ottawa)

Ward comes out displaying a jiu jitsu clinic as he transitions from armbar to triangle and back again after a quick take down. Andrews is able to break free and is taken dow again where ward goes for more submission, after a failed armbar attempt Andrews is able to gain top position and score some shots from the top. The round ends when ward is able to stand and take down Andrews again
Andrews takes a new approach and tries to guillotine his way to victory dropping down after failed takedown attemps from ward. Each time Ward is able to capitalize and score positioning points and small shots from the top. Transitioning to andrews’ back ward attemps a rear naked choke and Andrews scramble to escape, again from standing Andrews drops to a failed guillotine and the round ends with ward on top.

Once again Ward using positioning to score his points, Andrews is able to reverse and do some damange from the top position, from standing guard Andrews rains down blows on ward who does his best to keep Andrews at bay. With 10 seconds left inthe round ward is able to secure an arm and almost gets the armbar before the round ends.

Ward wins via decision

6. 170 Kris Baker (Ronin MMA-Ottawa) vs. Stephan Lefebvre (Arts Martiaux Evolution-Gatineau)

Lefebvre comes out overpowering Baker from the get go and the fighters have a brief exchange on the feet. Baker clinches Lefebvre and tries to contain him in a corner but Lefebrve throws Baker to the ground where he takes his back. After a brief battle Lefebvre takes the rear naked choke at 101 in the first round.

7. 155 Nick Lynch (NX Martial Arts- Orleans) vs. Mike Tremblay (Alpha MMA-Carleton Place)

Tremblay immediately goes for the take down and after being stuffed twice Lynch finally is taken down by a double leg. Tremblay looks to work from sidecontrol but lynch is able to get him off and stand back up. For the rest of the round after brief exchanges mike looks for take downs, he finally pulls flying guard just as the round ends

Mike again pulls flying guard and takes position for an armbar, lynch rolls and from side tremblay patiently waits for a chance to sweep, mike uses a sweep to gain top position and works for an armbar for the remainder of the round, the bell rings just as mike is pulling the arm lose.

Once again Mike pulls flying guard and looks to work for submissions Lynch does very well defending the submissions from his back but is’t able to move from his back.

Mike tremblay wins via split decision.

8. 170 Brendan Beavis (Prodigy MMA- St. Thomas) vs. Paul Levac (Ronin MMA – Ottawa)

Levac starts off the match landing a couple big fights from standing. Beavis rushes in for the take down and pulls guard. After some short shots from the top beavis loses Levac who attemps an armbar. From standing again Levac lands a few big head kicks that seems to rattle beavis who again rushes for the takedown. The round ends with beavis ontop landing short shots.

Again Levac gets the better of the stand up early in the round. The fight goes to the ground where Levan is able to gain mount. Beavis pulls Levac with a sweep and gains side control where he lands some short shots to end the round.

Beavis scores a big double right out the gates of round three where he is able to score mount after landing on top. He spends the rest of the round landing well planned heavy shots from full mount, where Levac isn’t able to mount any offence. The round ends with Beavis landing more big shots and maintaining control from the top.

Bevis takes the fight via unam decision

9. 185 Ralph Jean Pierre David (Juvaldo-Val d’Or) vs. Harley David (FIT MMA-Ottawa)

Pierre David comes out blasting kicks at David and moves round the ring with repeated leg kicks and kicks to the body. Harley David isn’t able to find his distance with his hands, which he seems to be more comfortable throwing. Pierre David lands more kicks to the body and legs and circles the ring with Harley.

Harley is able to find his range early and control most of the stand up through the round. After blasting David with a hook and woobling him, Harley is looking tired and fails to follow through, David blast Harley with push that sends him to the mats, where the fighters start from their feet again. David blasts Harley with another kick to end the round.

Harley takes david down with a double and remains in his guard for the full 2 minutes landing small shots. This should be enough for him to take the fight.

Ralph Jean Pierre David takes the unam decision

10. 155 Shane Sparenberg (Prodigy MMA- St Thomas) vs. Rob Tracey ( Arts Martiaux Evolution- Gatineau)

Rob Tracey takes advantage of his experience level early taking Sparenberg to the ground after a brief exchange and taking his back, where he then sinks in the early rnc at 1:07 into round 1.

Ryan Hawes (theriene jj – Ottawa) vs Vincent Forget (evolution mma Gatineau)

Forget is taken down early and mounted by Hawes after a scramble. The fighters go to the ropes after Forget escapes from the bottom and finds himself controlling Hawes from the side. Forget soon grabs ahold of Hawes arm and locks in a kimura at 1:45 into round 1.

11. 185 Steve Alexopoulos (FIT MMA-Ottawa) vs. Mathieu Lemay (Patenaude Kung Fu-Gatineau)

Lemay comes out of the ropes and looks to get a quick exchange before Alexopoulos is able to take him down. Steve is able to move to side then to half guard before taking Lemays back, steve tries to get a rnc but loses his position and ends up with lemay on top and landing a couple nice shots before the round ends.

Lemay comes out the gates and takes steve down early and lands decent shots. After taking steves back from throwing bombs from full mount steve is able to escape into Lemays guard where he lands a couple shots of his own. Lemay is able to stand up and steve tries for another take down as the round ends, but the bell comes first.

Steve wins by unam decision

12. 165 Patrick Gill (Zahabi MMA-Montreal) vs. Matthew Richardson (N1-Thai Boxing Academy- Ottawa)
Richardson lands a nice leg kick off the bat where gill returns a straight right. After tying eachother up gill is able to drag Richardson to the ground and land some more shots from the top. Richardson tries to roll and Gill takes guard and lands more nice shots. After a scramble Richardson is able to stand and tries for a takedown of his own, which gill stuffs, the round ends with Richardson almost getting knee bared and landing big shots from standing at the same time
Due to technical difficulties play by play for the last fight was lost.

Gill wins via spilt decision.

Wreck MMA: Unite for Brian's fight live play by play and results

Wreck MMA’S charitable event; Unite for Brian’s Fight took place on April 16, 2010 in front of a large crowd at the Robert Guertin Arena in Gatineau Quebec. The show was a huge success seeing a night full of barn burner fights that kept the crowd entertained and ready to help the cause.
Unite for Brian’s fight was an event looking to raise money for a local Ottawa Police Officer who has been diagnosed with ALS, and saw money raised from the event go towards a college fund for Officer Brian Dyck’s daughter.

The following is a recap of the night’s events, play by play, photos and much more.

For Bloodycancuksmma.com's WreckMMA's quick hit, Wreck MMA figher awards, and over 600 photos from this event, follow us on facebook in the Bloodycancuksmma.com group:

Wes Ranger vs. Albert Cheng

Both of these fighters were stepping into the ring for the very first, and Albert Cheng made sure his debut would get him noticed. As soon as the round started the fighters engaged and Cheng blasted a double leg that saw both fighters go through the ropes and almost onto the judges table. After the restart Cheng fired off another explosive double leg that planted Ranger on his back. For the rest of the fight Cheng controlled from top position landing big elbows and punches from mount. Ranger struggled to get back to the feet, where he was clearly more comfortable, but Cheng would have nothing of it. Eventually to avoid further punishment, Ranger gave Cheng his back and Cheng secured a rear naked choke, ending the fight at 4:30 into round 1.

Randy Turner vs. Mikael Pellerin

Making his second appearance, and looking for his first win under the Wreck MMA promotion Randy Turner was looking for blood coming out the gates. The fighters engaged and Mikael got the better of the stand up stunning Turner on the feet. Turner tied up Pellerin and took the fight to the ground, where the Gracie BJJ fighter looked fantastic controlling the action. After a short scramble, Turner found home taking Pellerin’s back, and sinking in a rear naked choke that ended the fight at 3:13 of the first round.

Mike Riley vs. Paul Ebejer

Riley, making his pro debut looked much more comfortable than his opponent, Ebejer while standing. Both fighters landed nice jabs, and tie each other up. Ebejer, looking much bigger than Riley uses his size to control the fight into a corner of the ring. Riley breaks free and lands an uppercut that sends Ebejer tumbling to the mat. The fight ends quickly and it is later reviled that Ebejer took the uppercut directly to the throat, giving Riley the TKO win at just 1:06 into round 1.

Anna Barone vs. Jenn Ricker

Anna Barone didn’t let the multiple opponent changes rile her up, as she looked extremely comfortable striking with BJJ artist Jenn Ricker, who took the fight vs. Barone on two days notice.

Round 1 saw Barone getting the edge in the stand up, finding home for her jabs at each punch Ricker seemed to throw. Ricker does a very good job in the clinch, showing her muay thai skills landing nice knees to the body. Barone shows a preference to her hands, landing multiple over hand rights that keep catching Ricker. Stunned and tired Ricker stays on her feet, struggling to take Barone to the mats. This round is none stop action and sees the crowd on their feet as round 1 comes to an end.

Bloodycanucks scores round 1- 10-9 Barone

Round two sees Ricker coming out tired and visibly damaged. Barone continues to find a home for her overhand right and lands one that eventually takes the lights out of Jenn Ricker, ending the fight via KO at 0:55 into round 2.

Gerry Bruyere vs. Jeff Laughren

Gerry Bruyere, with the clear reach advantage, fired off combos to start off the fight. Bruyere looked very confident in his striking and found his range early landing effect striking that seemed to baffle the shorter Laughren, who struggled to get the take down. After a brief scramble the fights found themselves on the ground, where Laughren was able to sink in a RNC that ends the fight midway through round 1.

Mike Hong vs. Stephane Pelletier

Mike Hong, who looked massive at 135 took control of round one early, landing multiple take downs, and not keeping the fight on their feet, where it was quite obvious that Pelletier was the better of the two. Hong scored twice with solid take downs, and maintained control on the ground, while Pelletier stayed very active looking for submissions to end the fight. Pelletier at one point had what looked like it could have been a fight ending triangle choke almost locked in, but the ref made the fighters stand up once they both slid under the ropes. Tough break for Pelletier, as Hong lands another take down before the round ends.

Bloodycanucksmma scores the round 10-9 Hong

Round two saw Hong step away from his game plan in round one and kept the fight standing. Pelletier, takes control of this, landing bigger combos, and seeming to have a faster answer to every punch Hong throws. Pelletier controls the entire stand up game from start to finish of the round.

Bloodycancuks scores the second round 10-9 Pelletier.

Round three finds Hong looking back to his original game plan, and takes down Pelletier, where he again controls the fight from mount and side control. While Pelletier does stay busy from his back, Hong hangs on and pulls out the unanimous decision win.

All three judges score the fight 29-28 Hung.

Stephane Bernadel vs. Justin Smethurst

Smethurst, who towers over Bernadel, is also the slower of the two fights, as Bernadel stays light on his feet and moves in and out with nice combos. The leg kick is there waiting for Steph to take full advantage of, but he sticks to his hands and unloaded 3-5 hit combos to the face and body of Smethurst at will. Smethurst does not go un-noticed though, landing a body kick hard enough to leave a mark on Bernadels ribs. After the first round of action the fighters go back to their corners. Steph looks un-phased, while Smethurst, taking a lot of damage to the body, looks tired.

Bloodycancucks scores round one 10-9 Bernadel.

Round 2 sees much of the same, as round one. Bernadel controls the stand up and this time is taking advantage of the lead leg of the flat footed Smethurst that is just begging to be kicked off into the stands. Steph is focusing more on the body shots to the tired Smethrust, who does his best to keep Bernadel at bay. After landing a nice body shot to Smethurst, Bernadel pounces and ends the fight via TKO at 2:43 into round 2.

Chase Dagenhardt vs. Craig Brown

The undefeated Dagenhardt comes out swinging hard and wild vs. Brown, who’s making his debut at 185. Brown does a good job of evading punishment and takes the fight to the ground after dragging down Dagenhardt. Brown lands nice short elbows from side control and does his best to find a submission from the top. Dagenhardt finds his footing and stands up, only to be belly to back suplexed back down again by Brown, who in turn sinks his hooks in and seals in a RNC ending the fight at 3:23 into round 1.

Samuel Guilet vs. Kurt Southern

BTT Canada’s Samuel Guilet wastes no time getting the fight to the ground where he controls the action right out the gates. Guilet takes Southern’s back and grabs an arm and starts to pull. Southern who is a very Strong wrestler, does his best to guard his arm, and lifts Guilet into the air and slams his down. This however only sinks the arm in deeper and Guilet seals the deal with an inverted armbar at 2:09 into round 1.

Louis Phillip Carle vs. Simon Marini
Co-main event.

The crowd favoured Carle starts off the round with a nice jab, that is answered with an identical jab from Marini. Both fighters are very technical strikers, and pick their shots wisely. Marini, who is the flatter of the two on the feet, uses his head movement to draw shots, and counters well vs. Carle, who lands the better of the exchanges. Marini ties up Carle and being the strong of the two is able to move Carle into the corner where the two continue to exchange knees and rabbit punches from the tie up. Marini drags Carle to the ground, where they scramble back to their feet, and when they break free Carle catches Marini with a nice hook that leaves a mouse and a small cut under Marini’s left eye. The round ends and the fighters return to their corner.

Bloodycanucks scores the round 10-9 Carle

Round two sees Carle even lighter on his feet, and he starts taking it to the leg of the flatter footed Marini with a nice hard leg kick to open the round. After a brief exchange Marini catches Carle which sees him stumble on the mat and fall to a knee, Marini takes full advantage and jumps on Carle’s back, and sinks in the RNC to end the fight at 2:08 into round 2.

Ian Loveland vs. Xavier Desroches
135lb title fight, Main event.

Round one sees the much taller Loveland find his distance early vs. the 5’4 Desroches. Xavier throws a few big punches and misses, while Loveland feints and rocks Desroches with a combo and a head kick. Xavier looks to tie up Loveland, but Loveland lands some big shots that send Desroches to the mat. Loveland jumps on top and pounds away ending the fight at 0:41 into round one. Loveland takes the bantamweight title and gives much respect to Desroches, who took the fight on 1 weeks’ notice against him, and says “you know, this guy shows true heart of a champion, he takes the fight on 1 weeks’ notice, and I have literally 10 times as many fights as he does, much respect to Desroches)

Loveland than says he would like to fight Nick Denis, who is in attendance. The Sengoku and KOTC vet comes into the ring and both fighters shake hands. Denis says he’d love to fight the hard hitting Loveland, setting up a possible first title defence for Loveland.
